Chequamegon Bay & Hayward, Wisconsin Ice Fishing Report 2-19-15
After declaring in last week’s report that we’ve had “ideal conditions” to get on the ice this year, you can imagine that I haven’t been very well thought of since! Yes, I should know better and leave well enough alone. My sincere apologies to Josh and Aron as well as everyone else that have dealt the brutal temperatures we’ve experienced over the past week. I’ll take the blame for this one! Unfortunately, we don’t have a report from Aron this week, but he’s got a really good excuse. As I write this he and his wife Lacey are in the hospital awaiting the arrival of their first child. This baby has sure kept everyone in suspense, and I know the Kasterns are more than ready to start changing diapers. Good luck today guys!!!
A little nasty weather didn’t deter Josh Teigen, and he was able to put some time in scouting for upcoming trips on Chequamegon Bay. He along with his friends Acorn, and Rich found some browns up to 24″ and splake up to 18″ near shore on a really nasty day. With limited mobility on cold windy days, sometimes your best bet is to get tight to a shoreline and hunker down. Nice looking brown Rich!
The following day, Josh was joined by Scott, Troy, and Taylor (7 yrs. old). Josh says Taylor stole the show as they caught lakers up to 19″, splake up to 17″, whitefish up to 26″, and a fat 24″ brown. Josh stuck with the near shore bite in 25′ – 65′ of water jigging Kastmaster spoons. If you’ve been paying attention, the Apostle Islands bite doesn’t always mean fishing depths over 100′. Great near shore action can be found for with mixed bag catches without a ton of specialized equipment necessary. Sometimes less is more… Way to go Taylor! You showed the big guys how to get it done!!!
Norb Philipsek of Lake Nebagamon, WI and Tim Foley of Ashland, WI spent a half day with Josh. Again they worked the near shore bite. This time they found fish as shallow as 10′ out to 30′. Splake up to 18″, browns up to 20″, and a 26″ laker came on spoons and blade baits. Way to get after it Tim and Norb! Sticking tight to shorelines has definitely payed off for Josh and his crew this week. With sub zero temps continuing to appear in the forecast, we’re definitely making more ice with depths over 15″ in the Bayfield area. Travel by foot, ATV, and snowmobile travel all continue to be excellent. Thanks for the report Josh! Now… There will be no more commentary on our weather. Promise!!!
Thanks to an overwhelming outpouring of generosity by the outdoor community, the benefit for Don Christensen that was held last Saturday was a tremendous success. $28,900 was raised, and our good friend Don will continue his fight against MS. I’ve included a list below of the friends, family, businesses, and caring citizens that donated their time, money, and resources for this great event. The list is long, and I sincerely apologize if anyone was left out. I can’t express the appreciation I have for everything that was done, and I’m certainly proud of all my brothers and sisters in the outdoors. Once again, you stepped up when needed! I’ve included a picture of Don and my good friend Scott Roppe from our last fishing trip. Can’t wait for the next one fellas!!!
