Chequamegon Bay Fishing Report, 8-26-14

Bass O Rama has continued over the past few days on Chequamegon Bay.  The bite slowed up a bit however over the weekend, but we were still able to put a lot of nice fish in the boat.  Antonio Trujillo Sr. and his son Antonio Jr. from Delafield, WI joined me on Saturday for another gloomy day with NE winds on Cheguamegon Bay.  This weather pattern just wouldn’t let up!  I shouldn’t have been surprised that the smallies finally had enough to eat over the past few weeks.  With the tear we were on, it had to slow down at some point. There were still fish to be caught though, and we ended up putting a very nice day together that included an awesome 21.5″ fish landed by Antonio Jr.  We caught our fish in 14′ – 16′ of water on minnows and water temperatures held steady at 65 degrees throughout the day.  We moved frequently to find feeding fish, and the Trujillos did an outstanding job.  Best wishes to Antonio Jr. with his upcoming soccer season.  If he’s as good on the soccer field as he is in the boat, the teams he plays better watch out!!!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Jesse Bohn from Stetsonville, WI brought his 9 year old son Tyler along on Sunday for a half day trip, and let me tell you what…  Tyler can fish!!!  The bite remained slow, but we found plenty of nice fish up to 19 1/2″ in 14′ – 18′ of water using minnows.  It was another cloudy day with water temperatures still holding at 65 degrees, but we had a good chop which helped us cover a lot of area to locate biters.  Our electronics were a big help as well.  Most of the times we’d locate fish on the graph, we’d get a strike.  By the time we were done, we’d put a nice trip together.  Tyler was absolutely stellar setting the hook and reeling in the fish all by himself.  I’ve fished with many kids, and he’s certainly one of the best.  Definitely guide material…  Thanks to Jesse and Tyler for an incredibly fun morning.  Tyler…  You’re the man!!!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

With some appointments to take care of on Monday, I had a chance to get Morgan out for one last hurrah in the afternoon before school starts next week.  We decided to to a little exploring on the bay and found some awesome fish in 12′ – 16′ of water on drop shots and plastics.  Our largest fish included a 20″ x 16″ fish that’s the fattest smallmouth I’ve ever seen.  With a belly like that, it’s obvious that the fish on Chequamegon Bay have plenty of food.  I’d love to know what that fish weighed…  It looked like an October fish!  As usual, The Morganator did an excellent job on a hot, humid, and windy day with water temps ranging from 65 – 67 degrees.  I can’t believe school starts next week…  Where did it go???  Good luck at the big school Morgan.  You rock!!!

 

The winter of 2014 was one most of us want to forget.  I know I do!!!  Thankfully, my neighbor Rod Abbas was kind enough to help me with the overwhelming plowing responsibilities I had.  We couldn’t have made it through without him, and Tuesday was time for a little pay back on Chequamegon Bay.  We started out the day looking for some walleyes without any success, so we turned to smallmouth in the afternoon and absolutely tore them up.  We caught a pile of fish up to 20.5″ in 14′ – 19′ of water on minnows that included back to back tagged fish.  That’s a first in my boat…  This has definitely been the year of firsts!!!  The fish were very aggressive, and I had a blast watching Rod crank in fish after fish on a beautiful afternoon with high skies and comfortable temperatures.  Water temperatures ranged from 65 – 67 degrees.  The net got a workout, and so did the camera.  What an awesome day to be on the bay!  Congratulations on some great fish Rod, and thank you for all of your efforts last winter.  You’re a great neighbor!!!
